Watermelon special fruitcarving by Takashi Itoh (http://takashi64.hp.infoseek.co.jp/)
Farmer’s markets, community supported agriculture (CSA), “locavores,” viable place-based agriculture, organic foods, local produce sold in supermarkets.
I’ve always believed that home grown fruits and vegetables taste best. And if you can’t grow them in your own backyard than your local farm stand is the next best source. Apparently many people share this belief since the demand for locally grown produce has exploded over the past ten years. And while there is an art to growing delicious fruits and vegetables, garden produce can also be put to artistic purposes.
So support your local farm stand. And think on the words of Cindy Burke, author of “To Buy ot Not to Buy Organic: What You Need to Know to Choose the Healthiest, Safest, Most Earth-Friendly Food” (Marlowe and Company), as quoted in The New York Times:
Local food is more delicious, true. But buying it does more than fill our bellies, she said. It keeps us connected. Technology, the mass media, long commutes and the never-ending pressure to earn more money keeps us separate from our neighbors and families, she said. And these days, people are so mobile that they don’t necessarily live in the place where they grew up. “Eating locally ties us to a place,” she said. “It give us roots in the local community where we live. It makes us think about other people, and how we’re connected. It puts us in touch with a life force we can’t find anywhere else.”
