An article in the August 26, 2007 edition of the New York Times Magazine (Chill Seekers, free registration may be required) profiled the work of Okamoto New York Ice Studio.

Apparently ice can serve as more than a medium for sculpture. The Ice Hôtel de Glace Quebec-Canada is an architectural wonder made of (what else?) ice.

And then there is environmental sculptor Andy Goldsworthy who uses natural materials to create art. Goldsworthy explores and experiments with various natural materiel such as leaves, grasses, stones, wood, sand, clay, ice, and snow.

And who can forget Snowballs, made from Scottish snow and transferred from cold storage to melt on the streets of London, warmed by the summer sun?

A snowball is simple, direct and familiar to most of us. I use this simplicity as a container for feelings and ideas that function on many levels.

Finally, let’s not forget Nature herself, who transforms liquid water into that most beautful of objects: the snowflake.

These are lovely. I’m particularly enchanted by Andy Goldsworthy’s work, and the range of art of his work. Thanks.

P.S. I thought that I’d put MadSilence on my blogroll as link long ago, but I hadn’t! You’re on there now.

Thanks BookGirl. I’ve been a fan of Goldsworthy for years. Somewhere there’s a picture of me standing by his Wall at the Storm King Art Center: http://www.stormking.org/AndyGoldsworthy.html.
